Getting around Vietnam by ferry

Water transport is a common way to travel in Vietnam, a country with 5,000 km of navigable waters.

Besides providing access to the major islands like Cat Ba, Phu Quy, Phu Quoc and Con Dao, river ferries conveniently connect cities through fluvial channels.

Northern Vietnam

The Northeastearn Coast consists of the province of Quang Ninh and the city of Hai Phong.

Cat Ba

Cat Ba is the largest island in Northern Vietnam. The island is renowned for containing Cat Ba National Park, one of the most important biosphere reserves in Vietnam. It was designated as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Besides exploring the national park and trekking through the island, travallers can board a cruise around Lan Ha Bay. Lan Ha Bay surrounds Cat Ba and is adjacent to Ha Long Bay. Together they share the most of its beauty and charm. The bay comprises 300 karst islands, limestone pillars, and numerous white-sand beaches. It receives fewer tourists than Ha Long Bay, making it more quiet and isolated.

Cat Ba is accessible by ferry from the port of Hong Bang in Hai Phong and the port of Tuan Chau in Ha Long. Alternatively, travellers can combine joint bus and ferry routes.

Con Dao

Situated about 185 km from the coast of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in Southeastern Vietnam, Con Dao archipelago includes 16 mountainous islands and islets.

The group of islands was first mentioned by Marco Polo in the description of his voyage from China to India in 1292. Later in the 18th century, the British East India Company founded a settlement in the largest island namely Con Son Island. Since then, it was a trading post for ships sailing the route between India and China, known as Pulo Condore.

In 1984 the islands were given protected status as part of Con Dao National Park, which establishes a marine protected area to preserve coral reefs and water species while developing sustainable eco-tourism. Most of the inland area of the archipelago is composed by primary jungle and magmatic rock. Around it, you can find beautiful beaches and hidden lagoons. Due to its remote location and the difficulty to access there are relatively few tourists, Con Dao is a paradise off the beaten track.

Con Dao is accessible by ferry from the port of Tran De in Soc Trang in 2 hours 30 minutes.

The beaches are the main attraction in the island. Phu Quoc offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam. It includes Long Beach along the western coast, Bai Sao and Bai Kem in the south, Bai Ganh Dau and Bai Dai in the north, and the An Thoi Archipelago beaches. Besides swimming, snorkeling and sun-bathing, eating seafood and watching the sunset are also the most popular activities.

Tourists can also join a day tour, which typically includes a boat trip around the islands, fishing, diving to see corals and swim in the pristine beaches like Bai Men.
