GETTING AROUND LAOS BY PLANE

Laos has 7 commercial airports.

The two major international airports are Vientiane Airport serving the capital Vientiane and Luang Prabang Airport serving the ancient city of Luang Prabang.

Other important regional airports are Luang Namtha Airport, Muang Xay Airport, Xieng Khouang Airport serving Phonsavan, Savannakhet Airport and Pakse Airport.

There is one domestic carrier operating in Laos, the full-service carrier Lao Airlines.

GETTING AROUND LAOS BY TRAIN

Laos has 422 kilometres of railway network, which consist of the main line Vientiane–Boten connecting Vientiane and Boten in the border with China and the extension line Vientiane–Kunming.

Laos-China Railway (LCR) operates two types of train services, including high-speed trains and ordinary trains.

The high-speed railway service is operated with CR200J trainsets running at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The ordinary railway service is operated with HXD3CA locomotives running at a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

The major railway stations are Vientiane Station and Vang Vieng Station serving Central Laos, and Luang Prabang Station, Muang Xay Station and Luang Namtha Station serving Northern Laos.

The railway network in Laos is managed by Laos-China Railway (LCR), a joint venture company participated by Laos and China governments.

GETTING AROUND LAOS BY BUS

Travelling by bus in Laos is an affordable way to reach the popular tourist destinations out of the railway network or inaccessible by plane.

Seated buses and sleeper buses generally cover long distances during daytime or overnight and connect two or more cities in different provinces.

Minibuses and minivans generally cover short distances during daytime and connect cities in the same province or neighbor provinces.

The major bus stations are Vientiane North Bus Station and Vientiane South Bus Station in Vientiane, Luang Prabang North Bus Station in Luang Prabang and Chitpasong Bus Station in Pakse.

Road transportation in Laos is carried out by four types of vehicles: seated buses, sleeper buses, minibuses and minivans.

The bus company Chitpasong Bus operates modern fleets of vehicles equipped with air-conditioning, seats or berths, and on-board amenities.
