How to get around Tokyo

The easiest way to get around Tokyo is by train and by subway.

Is it better to get around Tokyo by train or by subway?

Tokyo's urban rail network comprises train lines operated by Japan Railways (JR) and subway lines operated by Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway.

Commuters and travellers indistinctively use one or other to move around the city, but the networks are completely separated so it is recommended that you choose one of the mass transit systems and stay within it throughout all the journey to avoid higher costs when transferring lines run by different operators.

The railway company JR East operates two train lines in Tokyo.

  • - The Yamanote Line is probably the most convenient and popular way to get around Tokyo. The commuter service runs in a loop around the city connecting Tokyo's most famous stations such as Tokyo Station, Akibahara Station, Ueno Station, Ikebukuro Station, Shinjuku Station and Shibuya Station.
  • - The Chuo-Sobu Line is possibly the quickest way to cross Tokyo from east to west. The commuter service runs accross the city connecting Akihabara Station and Tokyo Station on the east and Shinjuku Station on the west.

Besides, Tokyo has an extensive subway network operated by two companies: Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway.
